The Anambra State Government, through its Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare, has launched an investigation into the alleged murder of Mrs. Ogechukwu Okafor, reportedly killed by her husband, Mr. Elijah Emeka Ibeabuchi.
The tragic incident, which occurred on August 13, 2024, in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area, was brought to the ministry’s attention by the deceased’s family, following suspicious behavior from the husband.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday by the media aide to the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, it was revealed that Mr. Ibeabuchi, a pastor, initially claimed that his wife fell from a four-storey building. However, the family grew suspicious and sought justice.
According to Mrs. Okafor’s uncle, Mr. Samuel Onuorah, who led the family’s complaint to the ministry, the husband’s story fell apart after they visited the mortuary where the body had been deposited. They discovered stab wounds on her neck and chest, contradicting the fall claim.
In response, Commissioner Ify Obinabo called on stakeholders, women’s groups, human rights activists, and the public to support the government’s efforts to ensure justice for the deceased. She assured that the state would thoroughly investigate the case and involve the governor to ensure the family receives justice.
