BRITISH PM STARMER BACKS US‑ISRAELI STRIKES, LABELS IRAN ‘UTTERLY ABHORRENT’ AS UK WARPLANES JOIN REGIONAL PATROL

The United Kingdom has clarified that it did not participate in the recent U.S.–Israeli military strikes on Iran, while simultaneously deploying defensive forces across the Middle East, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned Tehran’s actions amid rapidly escalating regional conflict.

In a nationally broadcast speech on Saturday, Starmer emphasized Britain’s non-involvement in the strikes but reaffirmed support for efforts aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

“Earlier this morning, the United States and Israel struck targets in Iran. Iran has since launched indiscriminate strikes across the region,” the Prime Minister said, noting the broader escalation has heightened fears of a wider Middle East war.

Starmer acknowledged public concern in Britain over regional security and the potential impact on civilians. He described Iran’s leadership as a persistent threat, both regionally and domestically, citing the regime’s history of repression and destabilizing actions.

“Even in the United Kingdom, the Iranian regime poses a direct threat to dissidents and to the Jewish Community. Over the last year alone, they have backed more than 20 potentially lethal attacks on UK soil,” Starmer stated.

He condemned Iran’s retaliatory missile strikes affecting countries not directly involved in the confrontation and extended Britain’s support to these nations.

While stressing the importance of diplomacy, the Prime Minister confirmed that British military assets in the Middle East have been mobilized for defensive purposes. “Our forces are active, and British planes are in the sky today as part of coordinated regional defensive operations to protect our people, our interests, and our allies,” he said.

Starmer also confirmed heightened security measures for British personnel and ongoing support for UK nationals in affected areas.

In direct remarks to Tehran, he urged an immediate halt to hostilities and a return to diplomatic negotiations. “Iran should end this now, cease its weapons programs, and stop the appalling violence against its own people. This is the root to de-escalation and a return to the negotiation table,” he said.

The Prime Minister’s statements signal Britain’s attempt to balance military readiness with diplomatic pressure amid growing fears of a broader international confrontation in the region.
