Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away at the age of 82 in a London clinic, according to a statement released on Sunday.
His former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, confirmed the news in a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Sources close to the family revealed that Buhari had been battling an undisclosed illness and was recently discharged from intensive care. He reportedly fell ill during a routine medical check-up abroad and remained under close observation until his condition deteriorated.
While the specifics of his ailment were never publicly disclosed, the former leader was believed to be on the path to recovery before his health declined.
Buhari, a retired major general, first ruled Nigeria as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 before returning to power as a democratically elected president in 2015. His administration, which lasted until 2023, focused on anti-corruption initiatives, economic reforms, and confronting persistent insecurity throughout the nation.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon, as tributes begin to flow in from across Nigeria and beyond.
