The presidency, on Wednesday has downplayed the impeachment threats to President Muhammadu Buhari by Senators from opposition parties, describing it as a mere word that holds no water.

The presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina said those who threatened to impeach the President are minorities, adding that they can’t pull any string.

Earlier in the day, the opposition lawmakers staged a walkout from the Senate chamber and threatened to commence impeachment proceedings against President Buhari should he fail to address the insecurity within a six-week ultimatum.

Reacting to the development on Channels Television’s Politics Today, monitored by Headlinenews.news, Adesina likened the situation to lawmakers merely playing to the gallery, adding that the majority will not allow that happen.

In his words, “I think it was just bravado, and sadly, security is not something you subject to bravado.

“You don’t begin to issue flippant ultimatums in something that is a matter of life and death. Those who spoke today are the minority of minorities, they will have their say as is needful in a democracy but it will not go beyond that.

“They know in their heart of hearts that they cannot achieve what they are saying, they are just wasting the country’s time, wasting the time of the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, they know that they cannot achieve it.

“The truth is that in this kind of scenario, minority will always have its say while the majority will have its way.”

But a former Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has claimed that some lawmakers elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are ready to join the opposition senators in their move to impeach President Buhari.

According to Abaribe, almost every senator in the red chamber are fed up with the worsening insecurity roiling the country and are ready to ship the current administration out of office.

In his words: “It’s very wrong for anybody to say. You don’t have the numbers. That’s not true. Most of the APC senators are with us. And at the point at which this (impeachment) starts, that is when Nigerians will know that almost every senator is fed up and can no longer continue to see a situation that looks like what happened in the time of Rome, Nero, fiddling while Rome is burning. This is exactly what is going on today.”
