Canada, Australia, UK recognise Palestine as a state

London — The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have formally recognised the State of Palestine in a coordinated announcement aimed at reviving prospects for a two-state solution.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer made the declaration in a post on X on Sunday, stating:

“Today, to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine. That means a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state. At the moment, we have neither.”

Starmer had previously pledged in July that the UK would recognise Palestine this September unless Israel took “substantive steps” towards peace.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau echoed the move, writing:

“Canada recognises the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also confirmed his government’s recognition, describing it as part of “an international effort for a two-state solution” alongside Canada and Britain.

However, the coordinated recognition drew swift condemnation in Israel. Benny Gantz, leader of the Blue and White party, warned that such moves would embolden Hamas and complicate efforts to secure the release of hostages.

“Recognising a Palestinian State after October 7 ultimately only emboldens Hamas, extends the war, distances the prospects of a hostage deal and sends a clear message of support to Iran and its proxies,” Gantz posted on X.

Instead, he urged Western nations to apply “maximum pressure” on Hamas to step down from power and release captives “before anything else.”

The decision by London, Ottawa, and Canberra adds to growing international momentum for Palestinian statehood, which has already been recognised by more than 75 percent of United Nations member states.
