Cardoso to Lead Nigeria’s Delegation to World Bank-IMF Meetings

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, is set to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 2025 World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) annual meetings, scheduled to begin on Monday in Washington, D.C.

Cardoso will represent the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, who is currently indisposed. According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the delegation will also include the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite.

The meetings will focus on major global economic priorities such as debt sustainability, inflation management, and inclusive growth strategies. Nigeria’s participation aims to strengthen engagement with development partners and international financial institutions, especially as the government continues to implement far-reaching fiscal and monetary reforms designed to stimulate growth and stabilize the economy.

According to the World Bank, highlights of this year’s meetings include the Development Committee plenary on October 16 and the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) session on October 17. The events will also feature regional briefings, press conferences, and several discussions on international development, financial markets, and the global economic outlook.

Nigeria is expected to use the platform to present updates on the progress made under its current reform agenda — particularly efforts to stabilize the naira, tame inflation, and restore investor confidence.

The discussions are also expected to explore how multilateral institutions can provide additional support to help cushion the social impact of the country’s ongoing economic adjustment measures.
