Contractor Abandons ₦224m Ijora Causeway Project in Lagos, Stranding Commuters

The contractor tasked with the ₦224 million Ijora Causeway repair project in Lagos State, RCUBIX LTD, has abandoned the site, leaving commuters and traders grappling with severe hardship, despite significant funds released by the Federal Government. The project, coded ERGP12209973, was budgeted at ₦414,411,854 in 2024 under the Federal Ministry of Works to repair the failed section from Ijora 7UP to Carter Bridge.

According to Monitng’s Tracka platform, ₦224 million was paid to RCUBIX LTD in August 2024, yet major sections, including the 7UP roundabout and Badia Junction, remain in disrepair. The contractor reportedly deserted the site over three months ago, exacerbating traffic congestion, raising transport costs, and causing business losses. The neglected road has also become a hotspot for nighttime robberies, endangering motorists.

Monitng described the Ijora Causeway as a vital link for thousands of Lagosians, slamming the abandonment as a “betrayal of public trust.” The group called for the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate RCUBIX LTD and the supervising agency. It urged the Federal Government to compel the contractor to resume work and complete the project to standard, warning that delays worsen residents’ suffering. Monitng praised its Tracka team for exposing the issue via the GovSpend platform, highlighting the role of civic monitoring in ensuring accountability.
