A Federal High Court in Benin City has dismissed a ₦504.3 million lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) tied to a May 23, 2023, sting operation. Lawyer Christopher E. Mene had demanded ₦4.375 million for alleged property damage—like broken doors—and ₦500 million in exemplary damages.
Justice C.A. Obiozor ruled that Mene didn’t prove his case, pointing to EFCC evidence that criminals were nabbed at the property, with 18 already convicted and sentenced. The judge said Mene should chase his tenants instead, as their lease barred illegal activities and promised to cover any fallout.
Citing Section 12 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, which allows forcible entry for lawful duties, Obiozor called the EFCC’s actions legal and not excessive.
“Let law enforcement agencies breathe and be allowed to do their work,” he said, urging no gag on anti-crime efforts.
The raid targeted internet fraudsters, arresting 44 suspects in Benin. This ruling underscores EFCC’s push against cybercrime in the area.
