CUBA BEGINS RELEASING MORE THAN 2,000 PRISONERS AS US PRESSURE MOUNTS

Cuba has started freeing more than 2,010 prisoners from its jails in what the government calls a “humanitarian and sovereign gesture” timed to the Holy Week holiday. This move comes as the island faces heightened pressure from the United States and a crippling oil blockade that has led to energy shortages and frequent blackouts.

Families greeted many of the released inmates with tears and hugs outside prisons near Havana, as those freed included women, young people, older adults, and foreigners. The government said the decision to pardon these inmates was based on factors such as good conduct, time already served, and health conditions. Officials did not release a full list of names or specific details about the crimes involved.

Human rights groups and observers have noted that the initial releases appear to focus on people convicted of common crimes rather than political prisoners. Many advocacy organisations have been closely watching to see whether any detainees held for anti‑government protests or political reasons are included, highlighting ongoing concerns about the treatment of political dissent in Cuba.

This is the second major prisoner release announced this year, following a smaller pardon earlier in March. The timing and scale of the amnesty have drawn attention as Cuba navigates diplomatic pressure from the US and seeks relief from its energy crisis, even as negotiations between the two countries continue.
