A fatal road accident on Wednesday evening in Akungba Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State, claimed at least eight lives, including a pregnant woman and a child. The incident involved a cement-laden truck that lost control and crashed into roadside shops along the Owo–Akungba–Ikare expressway near Holy Trinity Church, causing chaos in the town as residents and students from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), gathered at the scene.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander, Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed that the truck lost control after hitting a barricade in front of the university, resulting in the deaths of five males, two females, and one male child. He urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are in proper condition and to follow traffic rules to prevent such tragedies.
Akinibobola Ajidagba, Public Relations Officer of the AAUA Students’ Union, described the crash as heartbreaking, noting that the union had repeatedly called for a ban on heavy-duty trucks on Akungba roads to avoid such incidents. He stated that nearly 10 people died and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to ensuring student safety, urging students to stay off the highway for now.
