#Death Toll from Niger Flood Rises to 115 as Tinubu Orders Intensified Rescue Efforts

The death toll from the devastating flood in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has climbed to 115, with more than 150 people injured and over 200 households destroyed. In response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and security agencies to step up search, rescue, and relief operations in the affected areas.

The disaster, triggered by a torrential downpour on Wednesday night, initially claimed 21 lives and destroyed numerous homes in Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa communities. However, by Friday, the scale of the tragedy had worsened significantly, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), which has deployed personnel and resources to the scene.

Eyewitnesses described the flood as unprecedented. A century-old tree in Mokwa town was uprooted, and the only makeshift bridge connecting southern and northern Nigeria through Mokwa was swept away, stranding hundreds of commuters.

Federal and State Government Response

Worried by the scale of destruction, the Niger State Government has appealed for urgent federal assistance. In a statement, Jonathan Vatsa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication and Media Strategy, said:

“This is the worst flood disaster the state has experienced in recent history. The destruction is massive, and the state government cannot cope alone. We are calling on the federal government to intervene immediately.”

Vatsa also confirmed that all north-southbound vehicles are currently stranded in Mokwa due to the washed-out bridge.

Deputy Governor’s Visit

Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, alongside top state officials, visited the affected areas for an on-the-spot assessment. He described the level of destruction as “unimaginable” and urged residents to remain calm.

“We understand the pain and suffering this disaster has caused. The government will not abandon you. We are doing everything possible to reduce your hardship,” he assured.

He also ordered that severely injured victims be transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Bida for specialized care.

President Tinubu’s Directive

In a statement issued on Friday by Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, President Tinubu expressed deep concern over the tragic event.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been fully briefed on the situation and has directed all relevant emergency and security agencies to intensify ongoing search and rescue operations,” the statement read.

“The immediate priority of the Federal Government is to save lives and provide urgent relief to survivors.”

The federal government commended first responders, local divers, and volunteers for their efforts, and called on residents to cooperate with emergency officials and comply with evacuation directives.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and everyone affected by this disaster. In this time of grief, the nation stands in solidarity with the victims and their loved ones,” the statement concluded.
