DHQ ORDERS IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF UNAUTHORISED CHECKPOINTS NATIONWIDE (SEE LIST OF AFFECTED ROUTES)

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has directed the immediate removal of all non-essential and unauthorised roadblocks across Nigeria’s major highways, citing concerns over declining operational efficiency and rising security risks.

A memo issued on December 5 and signed by Brigadier General A. Rabiu on behalf of the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, noted that the growing number of unapproved checkpoints was hindering free movement and exposing security personnel to unnecessary danger.

The memo stated: “The Services Headquarters hereby instructs all TCS/FCs to ensure the prompt dismantling of all non-essential static roadblocks and unauthorised checkpoints within their respective Joint Operations Areas (JOA).”

While acknowledging the importance of road security, DHQ highlighted that the uncontrolled spread of checkpoints on several key routes has begun to slow operations and impede movement for both security forces and civilians. Among the affected routes are Abuja–Lokoja–Ajaokuta–Idah–Otukpa–Obollo Afor–Enugu; Abuja–Lokoja–Obajana–Kabba–Omuo–Ekiti–Ikole Ekiti; Abuja–Lokoja–Okene–Okpella–Auchi–Benin; Abuja–Kaduna–Kano; and Lagos–Ore–Benin–Asaba–Niger Bridge.

The memo explained that instead of static roadblocks, the military will adopt “aggressive mobile patrols and human intelligence gathering” to secure critical routes effectively. It further directed commanders to strictly adhere to approved checkpoint locations and maintain only those essential for operational and security purposes.

Checkpoints have long been a controversial issue in Nigeria, with some citizens viewing them as opportunities for extortion. There have also been reports of fatalities resulting from confrontations when drivers refused to comply with demands for bribes at certain checkpoints.

The Defence Headquarters’ move is therefore aimed at improving operational efficiency, reducing risks, and curbing potential abuses at roadblocks.
