Don’t Dare Security Operatives, IGP Warns Thugs Ahead of Anambra Election

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning to political thugs planning to disrupt the upcoming Anambra governorship election, cautioning them against challenging security agencies or threatening the integrity of the poll.

Egbetokun, represented by Acting Commissioner of Police Umar Hadejia from the Department of Operations, gave the warning in Abuja during the Cleen Foundation’s 2025 Anambra Governorship Election Security Threat Assessment Dissemination.

He emphasized that security agencies would not tolerate any action capable of undermining the credibility of the election, urging political parties, their candidates, and supporters to adhere strictly to the peace accord and electoral regulations.

“We have made all necessary arrangements to ensure security at INEC offices, for officials, observers, and law-abiding citizens. With the structures we’ve put in place, we are confident the election will be free of incidents,” he said.

The IGP warned that anyone attempting to disrupt the process would be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted according to the law.

The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Audi, represented by ACG David Ojelabi, also urged voters to maintain order during the election.

He noted that the updated security threat assessment was designed to help security agencies refine their strategies and prevent election-related violence, adding that distrust in the neutrality of some security personnel remained a concern.

Hashim recommended retraining officers on neutrality, de-escalation, and human rights-based policing to enhance professionalism.

Meanwhile, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has deployed staff monitors across the three senatorial districts of Anambra State to oversee police conduct during the election.

PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd), cautioned officers to maintain impartiality and discipline, stressing that those who compromise their duties would face sanctions.

He added that the Anambra poll would serve as a test case for the police ahead of the 2027 general elections, commending the state police command’s preparation and field readiness.

“The Commission will commend officers who demonstrate professionalism and sanction those found wanting,” Argungu said.

PSC monitors will operate from the state capital and across all senatorial zones to ensure compliance and transparency.
