The Yoruba Commitment Forum (YCF) has slammed rumors of a military coup against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling it an assault on Nigeria’s democracy and a direct provocation to the Yoruba people. In a statement signed by Otunba Tayo Onayemi, Barr. Akeem Aponmade, Mrs. Buky Tunde Oshunrinde, and Chief Olugbenga Oyewusi, the group expressed outrage that anyone would consider overthrowing a democratically elected government after 25 years of civilian rule.

Titled “Don’t Push Us to the Wall,” the statement rejected calls for military intervention since Tinubu’s 2023 election, labeling them dangerous and ethnically motivated. “Their only grievance seems to be that the President is Yoruba,” YCF said, stressing that no Yoruba has ever led a coup in Nigeria and that the community has often been a victim of political injustice.

The group praised Tinubu’s steps toward power devolution and regional balance, vowing to resist any destabilization. It warned that any unnatural harm to the President would be seen as an attack on the Yoruba nation and could signal their exclusion from Nigeria. YCF urged security agencies to stay vigilant and reaffirmed its commitment to peace and democracy, despite the government’s dismissal of the coup rumors as fake news.
