EFCC DECLARES CHINESE NATIONAL WANTED OVER FRAUD

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared a Chinese national, Peiyuan Niu, wanted over an alleged case of obtaining money under false pretence.

The development was announced in a notice released on Tuesday and signed by the commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale.

According to the EFCC, the suspect, who is 40 years old, is a Chinese national whose last known address is 111 Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Lagos State.

“The public is hereby notified that Peiyuan Niu, whose photograph appears above, is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in an alleged case of obtaining money by false pretence,” the notice stated.

The anti-graft agency called on members of the public who may have useful information about the suspect’s whereabouts to report to any of its offices nationwide or the nearest police station and other security agencies.

The commission also provided contact channels through which information can be forwarded, including a dedicated phone number and email address.

Meanwhile, the development comes shortly after the EFCC arraigned another Chinese national, Zhang Wen Hao, before Justice Ibrahim Shekarau of the Nasarawa State High Court sitting in Mararaba over an alleged fraud-related offence.

Zhang was brought before the court on a one-count charge bordering on cheating. According to the charge, he allegedly induced a man identified as Paul Yichol with the sum of ₦1,000 to open a bank account with Access Bank Plc for the purpose of carrying out unlawful financial transactions.

The charge states that the alleged offence occurred in March 2023 in Suleja and is contrary to Section 320 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria, punishable under Section 322 of the same law.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Following his plea, the prosecution counsel, Taiwo Aromolaran, requested a trial date, while defence counsel, Michael Ukatu, made an oral application for bail.

Justice Shekarau subsequently adjourned the case to March 12, 2026, for the hearing of the bail application and ordered that the defendant remain in EFCC custody pending the court’s decision.
