Abeokuta, Ogun State – April 5, 2025 — The ancient city of Abeokuta came alive this week as the people of Egbaland marked the annual Lisabi Day, a celebration honoring the legendary warrior Lisabi Agbongbo-Akala, credited with leading the Egba people to freedom from oppression in pre-colonial times.
The week-long event, which drew dignitaries, traditional rulers, cultural troupes, and Egba indigenes from across Nigeria and the diaspora, culminated in a grand finale at the Ake Palace, the seat of the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba (Dr.) Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III.
In his address, Oba Gbadebo extolled the legacy of Lisabi as a symbol of courage, unity, and resistance against injustice. “Lisabi represents the resilience and self-determination of the Egba people. This celebration is not only a reminder of our glorious past but also a call to uphold the values of integrity, unity, and service to the community,” the monarch said.
The celebration featured traditional rites, masquerade displays, cultural dances, and a symposium on Egba history and development. Various Egba groups, including the Egba National Association and women’s societies, used the occasion to launch community-based projects and scholarships aimed at youth empowerment and heritage preservation.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, represented by the Deputy Governor, emphasized the importance of cultural celebrations in fostering unity and development. “Lisabi Day is a unique platform for cultural renaissance and socioeconomic dialogue. The state government remains committed to supporting our traditional institutions in preserving our identity,” he noted.
Security was tight throughout the festivities, with collaborative efforts from local vigilante groups and the Nigeria Police ensuring a peaceful and orderly celebration.
Lisabi Day remains one of the most significant cultural festivals in Ogun State, bringing together the Egba diaspora in reaffirming their roots and charting a progressive path for Egbaland.
