Eko 2025: 150 Golfers Converge on Lagos for 13th Charity Tournament

At least 150 golfers from across Nigeria gathered at the Dolphin Golf Club in Ojo, Lagos, on Thursday for the 13th Golf & Tour Charity Association Tournament, tagged Eko 2025.

The annual sporting and humanitarian event, which brought together retired military personnel and civilians, also featured the donation of 200 bags of rice to widows of fallen soldiers living in NNS Wey Barracks.

Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Oba Ademola Makinde, said the four-day tournament provides an opportunity for members to socialise, network and give back to society. He stressed that the widows supported by the group are deserving beneficiaries, not beggars.

Makinde, who is also the defending champion, outlined the programme, noting that Thursday was for arrival and a meet-and-greet at the Naval Air Base. He said members would participate in a group game on Friday, followed by a group photograph and the association’s annual general meeting to decide the next host city. Saturday will be open to friends, nearby golf clubs and the wider golfing community, with awards and an after-party rounding off the event.

Rear Admiral Dogara Gora (rtd.) explained that membership of the association includes serving and retired military personnel as well as senior public servants, reflecting the group’s origins among military officers. Deputy Chairman, Rear Admiral David Adeniran, said the group’s charitable activities stem from gratitude, noting the need to give back to society after long years of service.

Secretary of the LOC, Commodore Abiodun Adeoye, highlighted the empowerment opportunities the tournament creates, especially for caddies and young people who support the event. He said many have gained sponsorships, mentoring and even help to join the military through the relationships built at the tournament.

Chief Coordinator, Brigadier General Mustapha Onoyiveta (rtd.), emphasized the economic boost the event brings, noting that hosting 150 golfers increases patronage for hotels, caterers, transporters and other service providers in the Navy Town area. He also reflected on the association’s growth since its establishment in 2021, with editions held in multiple Nigerian cities and tours to Uganda and Côte d’Ivoire.

In his remarks, Commander NNS Wey, Commodore Shehu Tasks, thanked the association for the rice donation and said the items would be distributed during the Command’s annual widows’ outreach on December 6.

Receiving the donation, Mrs. Ngozi Chizoba said the gesture made widows of fallen heroes feel remembered. She added that beyond food, widows often need care, attention and someone to talk to, describing the support as deeply appreciated.
