Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) has called on residents of Ibeju-Lekki and neighbouring communities to remain vigilant about electrical safety during the rainy season, stressing the need for compliance with safety standards to prevent accidents and safeguard reliable power supply.
The advisory was delivered at a customer engagement forum in the Ibeju district, where Acting CEO Mrs. Rekhiat Momoh—represented by Chief Finance Officer, Mr. Joseph Esenwa—addressed community leaders, business owners, and residents.
Mr. Esenwa warned against illegal electrical connections, vandalism of installations, and erecting structures close to power lines or directly above underground cables. “Please don’t build under wire lines for safety reasons,” he said. “There are standard regulations on building near high tension lines, and we must all comply with the required distances before construction.”
He assured residents that Eko DisCo has intensified preventive measures during the rainy season, including enhanced maintenance of cables and poles, increased monitoring of installations, and faster response to customer-reported faults. Customers were urged to promptly report any issues for immediate attention.
In a demonstration of responsiveness, Esenwa approved on-the-spot replacement orders for faulty meters and transformers raised during the forum. Six transformers were also cleared for energisation after repairs, bringing relief to affected communities.
Community representatives welcomed the interventions. Wale Aderoju, Chairman of the Lekki Estate Resident and Stakeholders Association Infrastructure Maintenance Committee, said: “We continue to cooperate with Eko DisCo to achieve better service levels while acting as watchmen against vandalism.”
On the challenge of energy theft, Esenwa described it as a “huge problem” and stressed the need for community vigilance. Destiny Homes representative, Joseph Idinye, added: “When somebody is stealing electricity and others look away, we all suffer for it.”
Head of Technical Services, Engr. Ovie Oghenekaro Adjekpiyede, provided updates on ongoing infrastructure projects, including a new federal substation for Ibeju-Lekki, an expansion of the Elemoro substation to add 8MW by the end of 2025, and stability projects covering Awoyaya to Lakue.
The forum also spotlighted Eko DisCo’s multi-tier complaints resolution system, giving customers channels to escalate unresolved issues, alongside new payment plan options and bandwidth verification processes.
With the festive ember months approaching, the company reiterated its commitment to safety, infrastructure reliability, and community partnership in sustaining stable power supply.
