Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has passed away. She died on Friday afternoon, March 27, 2026.
Her grandson, Bello El-Rufai, confirmed the development in a statement, expressing the family’s grief and gratitude for her life.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. From Allah we came and to Him we shall return. I wish to inform the public of the passing of my grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai,” he said.

“She was the biological mother of our father. We are grateful for the life she lived, and we pray that Allah grants her soul eternal rest. On behalf of the family, we ask for your prayers.”
Her passing comes at a difficult time for the family, as Nasir El-Rufai remains in custody over ongoing legal proceedings. He was recently arraigned on multiple charges, including alleged money laundering and conversion of public funds, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
A Federal High Court in Kaduna has adjourned the hearing of his bail application to March 31, following arguments from both the defence and prosecution.
The family has called on the public to keep the late matriarch in their prayers as they mourn her loss.
