Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has died. She passed away on Friday afternoon, March 27, 2026.

The news was confirmed by her grandson, Bello El-Rufai, who shared on social media: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. From Allah SWT we came and to Him we shall all return. I would like to inform the public of the passing of my grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who left us a few hours ago. We are grateful for the life she lived and pray Allah blesses her soul.”

The announcement comes while Malam Nasir El-Rufai is in custody. He was recently arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on a 10-count charge related to alleged conversion of public funds and money laundering. El-Rufai pleaded not guilty to all charges.

A Federal High Court in Kaduna, presided over by Justice Rilwanu Aikawa, adjourned the hearing of his bail application to March 31, following arguments from both the defence and prosecution.
