The Kano State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Abdu Zango, has described Saturday’s by-election in Kano State as peaceful and orderly, even as voter turnout remained low across many polling units.

Speaking during an on-the-spot assessment in Kano Municipal, Zango attributed the low participation to the ongoing Ramadan period and public perception that the contest involved only a limited number of candidates.

“As far as security is concerned, there were no issues. Citizens behaved responsibly. There was no violence or threat, visible or otherwise,” he said, commending residents for their orderly conduct.

Zango also dismissed concerns over the absence of some opposition parties, noting that political parties are responsible for fielding candidates in line with the Electoral Act. “Participation is entirely the responsibility of the parties. We do not decide who participates,” he stated.

INEC emphasized that the by-election proceeded smoothly despite the low turnout, with no major incidents reported, reinforcing the commission’s commitment to ensuring safe and credible electoral processes.
