The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended three suspects—Chukwu Kelvin (25), Kenechukwu Ude (25), and Uche Nwankwo (28)—for allegedly vandalizing high-voltage power cables in Aninri Local Government Area. The arrests were made on October 20, 2025, at 4:48 am during a routine stop-and-search by the Distress Response Squad along the Enugu/Port-Harcourt Expressway.

According to Police Public Relations Officer SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspects were caught transporting vandalized aluminum cables, hidden under cassava leaves in a white minibus (registration: ENU 450 XK). Police recovered a large cable cutter, two pairs of rubber gloves, and a bag of clothes. The suspects confessed to stealing the cables from electric poles along Ukete Road in Oduma and intended to sell them at New Artisan Market in Enugu.

Commissioner of Police CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating vandalism and protecting public utilities. The suspects will face court proceedings upon investigation completion. Earlier, on March 24, 2025, the Transmission Company of Nigeria reported the arrest of three others for similar vandalism in Agbogugu, Enugu, highlighting ongoing efforts with community and law enforcement collaboration.
