EU REPRESENTATIVE PLEDGES STRONGER TIES WITH NIGERIA, MEETS TINUBU IN LAGOS

The European Union has committed to deepening cooperation with Nigeria in security, trade, and key economic sectors amid global uncertainties.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, made the pledge on Monday during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at his Lagos residence. She said discussions focused on expanding collaboration in security, investment, trade, and critical raw materials.

“We are very like-minded partners, the European Union and Nigeria, and today we explored new ways to collaborate across key sectors,” Ms Kallas said. She added that the evolving global geopolitical environment requires countries committed to a rules-based international system to strengthen partnerships.

Highlighting security and cybersecurity as priority areas, Ms Kallas noted, “We are looking at enhanced cooperation in security and cybersecurity, where we believe there is significant potential for stronger collaboration.”

She also emphasised opportunities for increased trade and investment, particularly in sectors that support sustainable growth, while noting that critical raw materials remain a shared interest.

President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening ties with the EU, expressing gratitude for the bloc’s support in development, security, and economic cooperation. He reiterated that Nigeria is open to partnerships that foster shared prosperity, stability, and sustainable development.

The meeting included National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Minister of Budget and National Planning Abubakar Bagudu.
