Barely five years after leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and later the Social Democratic Congress (SDP), former Ekiti State Governor Segun Oni has officially rejoined APC.
Oni, who led Ekiti State from 2007 to 2010 under the PDP platform, contested the 2022 governorship election on the SDP ticket, finishing second behind Governor Biodun Oyebanji.
The ex-governor formally registered with APC at his country home in Ifaki-Ekiti, Ido/Osi Local Government Area, yesterday, greeted with jubilation by supporters and loyalists.
Speaking after his registration, Oni described his return as a “homecoming” and a deliberate decision made in the best interest of the people of Ekiti.
“I have returned to APC to work hand in hand with Governor Oyebanji and other stakeholders to promote peace, unity, and development in Ekiti State,” he said.
Oni emphasized the importance of sustaining political stability in the state beyond party lines, praising the current administration for its inclusive governance and commitment to grassroots development.
Reacting to Oni’s return, Gold Adedayo, Coordinator of APC’s e-registration exercise in Ekiti State, said the move is a major boost for the party and a significant political gain ahead of the June 20 governorship election.
Adedayo highlighted Oni’s strong grassroots influence, noting that his membership would encourage more people to join APC.
“Former Governor Oni is highly respected at the grassroots, and his registration at this time is a major plus for our ongoing online registration drive. We are confident that APC is positioned for success in future elections,” the commissioner said.
He further urged party leaders to maintain focus and avoid complacency in mobilisation efforts, stressing that continued grassroots engagement is essential to strengthen the party’s numbers across the state.
