President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun as Inspector General of Police (IGP) and appointed Assistant Inspector General Tunji Disu as his replacement.
The Presidency confirmed Egbetokun’s resignation on Monday, February 23, 2026, citing family issues that require his full attention.

However, multiple sources within the Presidency revealed that Egbetokun was directed to step down during a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday evening.
“It was in that meeting he was asked to go,” a highly placed official stated anonymously due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd IGP on June 19, 2023, with his substantive confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.
He was due for retirement on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory age of 60, but his tenure was controversially extended by the President.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said: “The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention.”
Tunji Disu, the new IGP, previously served as Rivers State Commissioner of Police and head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

NewsRegion has published a full profile of the new Inspector General.
Photos circulating online show Disu saluting his mother after his promotion to AIG, as well as earlier visits and official duties.

The appointment takes effect immediately, marking a significant leadership change in the Nigeria Police Force amid ongoing national security challenges.
