Father of Late Bilyaminu Bello Forgives Daughter-in-Law Maryam Sanda After Presidential Pardon

Alhaji Bello Isa, father of the late Bilyaminu Bello, who was killed by his wife Maryam Sanda, has expressed relief following President Bola Tinubu’s pardon of his daughter-in-law. In a joint interview in Abuja with Maryam’s father, Alhaji Garba Sanda, Isa described his decision to forgive as a humanitarian act rooted in his Muslim faith, emphasizing that he leaves judgment to Allah.

Isa revealed he had been advocating for Maryam’s release since before her 2020 death sentence for stabbing her husband, motivated by concern for her two young children. He noted that executing her would not revive his son but could bring peace to both families and allow the children to bond with their mother beyond prison visits. Dismissing objections from some family members, Isa affirmed that opinions vary, but as the father, forgiveness aligns with Islamic principles and promotes family harmony.

He disclosed writing to former Attorney General Abubakar Malami and the FCT Police Commissioner in 2019, seeking clemency, and swearing an affidavit to withdraw the prosecution. Although initial appeals were unanswered, Tinubu’s recent pardon under the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy fulfilled his request.

Alhaji Garba Sanda praised Isa’s compassion, noting their families have remained in contact since 2019. He highlighted Isa’s early pleas during Buhari’s tenure, including videos and letters, and expressed profound gratitude to the president. “Words cannot describe our appreciation for this gesture of mercy and reconciliation,” Garba said, praying for healing and love for the children from both sides.
