The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has described the current wave of infrastructural development in Abuja as a direct realization of President Bola Tinubu’s vision for the nation’s capital.
Wike made the remarks on Monday during the inauguration of the Mohammed Isa Road Extension project in the Asokoro District of Abuja.
Addressing critics who claim that the Tinubu administration has been inactive, Wike stated, “It is illogical to say the FCT is developing while the President is not working. He directs us, and we implement his instructions and vision, including ensuring that Abuja competes on a global scale. That is exactly what we are doing.”
He encouraged Nigerians to be honest about the progress, emphasizing that had these projects been completed earlier, the Tinubu administration would have been able to allocate resources to other areas.
Wike highlighted the transformation of Abuja over the past two years, assuring that the city would continue to evolve in the future. He appealed for sustained support for the administration, emphasizing President Tinubu’s dedication to improving citizens’ lives.
The minister outlined that the government’s investments span multiple sectors, including school rehabilitation, transport infrastructure, and health, aiming for balanced development across the FCT.
“We have made significant strides in roads, transport, sports, education, and now health. No sector will be neglected. The key is patience—allow us time to deliver these projects,” he said.
Wike further stressed that the success of these development initiatives depends on available resources and urged residents to support the government by paying taxes.
“All these quality roads, efficient drainage systems, and streetlights are possible because citizens pay taxes. Your compliance allows us to expand infrastructure, maintain clean drainages, and enhance the environment,” he explained.
Although officially a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike serves in the APC-led Tinubu administration. He has faced allegations of undermining the PDP to benefit the Tinubu government but insists on remaining loyal to his party.
President Tinubu, in June, hinted at the possibility of Wike defecting from the PDP, yet Wike has consistently reaffirmed his commitment to staying with the opposition party while contributing to the APC administration’s initiatives.
