Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has firmly defended his ownership of a luxury Rolls-Royce vehicle, dismissing criticism and rejecting claims that the car was a gift from contractors or associates.
The controversy began in April 2024 when Wike was photographed arriving in a Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II during a visit to Senator Barry Mpigi in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The luxury vehicle, valued at approximately $402,700 (roughly N616 million at current exchange rates), sparked widespread debate among Nigerians questioning how a public official could afford such an expensive car.
“I Bought It Myself”
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Wike addressed the allegations head-on, categorically denying that the vehicle was gifted to him.
“I have a Rolls-Royce. So what? Nobody gave it to me. I bought it,” Wike stated emphatically. “People ask, ‘With what money?’ Let me tell you—I came from a comfortable background.”
Claims of Privileged Background
The minister provided details about his family’s financial status, explaining that his wealth predates his political career. According to Wike, his father served as a general manager of multiple companies, providing the family with a comfortable lifestyle.
“As a student, I was driving a Mercedes-Benz. So don’t let anyone tell you I suddenly became wealthy. I didn’t come from poverty,” he explained, emphasizing that his current financial status isn’t a recent development.
Corruption Allegations Dismissed
Wike directly challenged corruption accusations, pointing to the absence of any court convictions against him. “When people say ‘corrupt,’ what exactly do they mean?” he questioned. “No court has ever indicted me for corruption. Wanting money to pay school fees or take care of your family does not make you corrupt.”
The minister also addressed claims about his property portfolio, acknowledging his real estate holdings while defending their legitimacy. “I was a Speaker for four years and Governor for eight years. Of course, I will have property. But that doesn’t make me corrupt. I’m not a bushman. I came from a structured family. In my local government, my father was one of the few who had a duplex back then.”
Political Rivalries and Accusations
Wike specifically responded to criticism from political opponents, suggesting that envy motivates some of the attacks against him. He made pointed remarks about unnamed critics, stating: “Someone said I was given a Rolls-Royce by a contractor. That’s a lie. That’s what he did — not me. That’s why he’s angry. He took a car from someone doing a job for him. That’s bribery, not what I did.”
The minister’s defense of his luxury vehicle ownership continues to generate mixed reactions across Nigeria, with public opinion divided between those who view it as inappropriate for a public servant and others who support his right to personal wealth.
