Abuja – Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged to support only candidates who back President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming FCT Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, regardless of their political party.
Wike made the declaration on Saturday night during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor, describing the event as a celebration of six decades of scholarship, leadership, and service.

“We have the FCT Area Council election coming up on Feb. 21, and I have a duty to support any candidate who supports President Tinubu to win. It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate who does not support Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology for my stand,” Wike stated.
Speaking about the celebrant, Wike described Onor as a credible ally, trustworthy friend, and good brother, noting his reliability in times of trouble. “I will continue to be with you and work with you because I know even if I am not alive today, you will not abandon my family,” he added.

In a citation read by Prof. Anthony Eyang, Onor was hailed for his upbringing in a community rooted in discipline, faith, and civic values. Born on February 14, 1966, in Ikom, Cross River, Onor’s journey spans from the lecture halls of the University of Calabar to the Nigerian Senate and Cross River politics, reflecting a life devoted to learning, leadership, and societal advancement.

Earlier, Chairman of the Planning Committee, Senator Philip Aduda, described the event as a thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness in Onor’s life, both as an academic and a politician. Former Governor of Benue, Samuel Otom, praised Onor as an “icon” and a man prepared for leadership, while former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, described him as a good man.

Chief Kalu Agabi (SAN), former Attorney General of the Federation, called Onor courageous and intelligent, highlighting his respect for the constitution. Prof. Dave Imbua of the University of Calabar presented a Festschrift, a scholarly book honoring Onor’s contributions to history and academia, which was unveiled by Ikpeazu with a N50 million donation.

In his remarks, Onor reflected on reaching his 60th year, emphasizing the value of excellence, character, and hard work. “Everything becomes insignificant if the finger of God is absent in one’s life,” he said, thanking his family, friends, and well-wishers for their support.
