The Federal Government has directed the implementation of a one-stop joint-interest screening system to strengthen security at Nigerian airports.
Mr. Ahmadu Danjuma, Acting Regional Manager (Northcentral) of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), disclosed this in Abuja, explaining that the Office of the National Security Adviser issued the directive to prevent herdsmen and other unauthorized individuals from accessing airport facilities.
The one-stop joint-interest screening system is a centralized checkpoint where multiple agencies—immigration, customs, and security—screen passengers, cargo, and staff in a single coordinated process. This approach improves efficiency, reduces duplication, and enhances overall security.
Danjuma said FAAN has also increased surveillance, deployed additional personnel, and installed modern equipment, including X-ray and L3 scanning machines, at major airports. Regular perimeter patrols are conducted in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure safety.
He noted that no security breaches have been reported this year at Abuja and other airports, even during peak travel periods. The authority has also strengthened intelligence gathering, perimeter security, and the exclusion of intruders from airport areas.
To further enhance safety, aviation security personnel have been authorized to bear arms. All personnel are required to complete the Basic STP123 AVSEC course mandated by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The course equips staff with skills in threat recognition, passenger and cargo screening, vehicle control, explosives detection, emergency response, and inter-agency coordination.
Danjuma said these measures demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving aviation security through personnel training, advanced technology, and inter-agency collaboration, assuring passengers of safe and efficient airport operations nationwide.
