On October 15, 2025, Minister of Works David Umahi expressed satisfaction with the progress and quality of the ongoing Lagos–Sagamu–Ijebu-Ode–Benin Expressway and Lagos–Ibadan reconstruction projects, calling them a benchmark for Nigeria’s federal road infrastructure.
During an inspection of Sections 1 and 2, handled by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Umahi noted that 8.1 kilometers of one carriageway on the Sagamu-bound lane are complete, with CCECC working to meet the December 2025 deadline.
The project, part of President Tinubu’s Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund, involves 24 kilometers of reinforced concrete pavement in Phase 2, Section 1, with a 12-meter-wide carriageway. Umahi highlighted the durability of concrete over asphalt, citing a 1950s concrete road in his state still standing. The expressway will feature solar-powered streetlights, CCTV, rest areas, clinics, and security posts under the Highway Development and Management Initiative, with tree planting for environmental enhancement.
The minister directed that completed five-kilometer stretches be opened to traffic after 21 days and maintained to ease travel. While tolling and CCTV plans are paused due to legal disputes, Umahi assured resolutions to enable private maintenance. The Lagos–Ibadan section’s bridge repairs were also praised, with final approvals pending minor asphalting and barrier installations. Ogun and Lagos State Controllers, Olayiwola Komolafe and Olukorede Kesha, commended the progress, noting work on bridges and road sections.
