FG DISMISSES US SECURITY ADVISORY, SAYS NIGERIA REMAINS STABLE

The Federal Government has moved to calm fears over Nigeria’s security following a recent move by the United States to withdraw non-essential staff from its embassy in Abuja.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, the government insisted that the country remains stable and fully functional, despite the U.S. advisory. According to the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, the decision by U.S. authorities is a routine precaution based on their internal protocols and should not be seen as a reflection of the overall security situation in Nigeria.

He acknowledged that while there are security challenges in some parts of the country, there is no widespread breakdown of law and order. Most regions, he said, continue to operate normally, with no disruption to governance, business activities, or daily life.

The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts by security agencies, noting that recent operations have helped disrupt criminal networks, reduce the activities of armed groups, and improve safety in vulnerable areas. He maintained that these efforts are already yielding visible results.

Beyond security, the government reassured investors and the international community that Nigeria remains open for business, travel, and investment. It added that current economic reforms are helping to boost confidence and strengthen the country’s global standing.

While recognising the right of countries to issue travel advisories, the government called for a more balanced and updated assessment of the situation. It urged international partners to engage directly with Nigerian authorities for accurate information.

The U.S. advisory, issued on April 8, 2026, placed Nigeria on a Level 3 travel warning, urging its citizens to reconsider travel due to concerns over crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest. It also listed several states under a higher “Do Not Travel” category and authorised the departure of non-emergency embassy staff and their families.

Despite this, Nigerian authorities insist the situation is under control and reaffirm their commitment to improving security, protecting both citizens and visitors, and ensuring the country remains a safe and welcoming destination.
