The Federal Government has officially commenced Phase Two of the rehabilitation, reconstruction, and expansion of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, alongside Section One of the Lagos-Sagamu Expressway. The project, set for completion within 24 months, aims to enhance road safety, connectivity, and economic growth.
Key infrastructure additions include underpasses at Kara, Wawa, Magboro, and Arepo, as well as flyover bridges at Kilometre 16 (near the Mountain of Fire Ministries) and Kilometre 37 at Makun, Sagamu. Additionally, five pedestrian bridges will be constructed at Arepo, Magboro, NASFAT, Deeper Life, and Redemption City to improve pedestrian safety.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, who announced the project during his inspection of federal road projects nationwide, outlined the scope of the second phase, which covers 24 kilometers. The subsequent phase will extend from Iperu to Ijebu-Ode, spanning 96 kilometers.
Umahi emphasized strict adherence to financial regulations, ensuring that contractors meet all requirements, including an Advanced Payment Guarantee (APG) certificate and a valid Performance Bond before receiving payments. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to national infrastructure and commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for fostering regional cooperation.
Representing President Tinubu at the flag-off, Governor Abiodun reiterated the administration’s dedication to improving road infrastructure, reducing travel time, and boosting economic activities. “This project aligns with our commitment to infrastructure renewal and will be executed to meet international standards,” Tinubu stated.
The president also appealed for patience from road users and urged contractors to expedite the project’s completion, acknowledging the expressway’s critical role in national economic development.
Meanwhile, Ogun State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya, lauded the Federal Government for incorporating pedestrian bridges into the project and assured full cooperation for timely execution.
Earlier, the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remo Land, Babatunde Ajayi, called on the government to install additional overpasses or speed bumps in Sagamu and Ilisan-Ilabo to enhance traffic management and prevent accidents.
