FG RELEASES ADDITIONAL ₦4.04BN FOR 600 FORMER NIGERIA AIRWAYS WORKERS

The Federal Government has released an additional ₦4.04 billion to settle outstanding severance benefits owed to 600 former employees of Nigeria Airways Limited (NAL), the defunct national carrier.

The payment covers beneficiaries in batches 010 and 011, according to a statement issued on Monday by Maryann Duke, Senior Special Assistant on Communications and Press Secretary to the Minister of Finance.

The latest disbursement follows an earlier payment of ₦18 billion announced in September 2026 for 2,700 former Nigeria Airways workers across the first nine batches.

According to the Finance Ministry, the latest payment comprises gross severance benefits of ₦4.251 billion, with deductions amounting to approximately ₦212.55 million. The net amount released for payment is ₦4,038,490,850.18.

The ministry said the disbursement forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to settle long-standing financial obligations to eligible former employees of the airline.

It added that payments are being processed in batches following the verification of beneficiaries and their records to ensure that approved funds reach the rightful recipients.

The Federal Government also acknowledged the prolonged hardship experienced by former workers and their families while waiting for their entitlements. It reaffirmed its commitment to resolving legitimate outstanding claims through a transparent process, while maintaining safeguards to protect public funds.

The ministry further stated that it would continue to support the payment of approved obligations in line with established procedures.

The latest release represents another step in the government’s efforts to address outstanding benefits owed to former Nigeria Airways employees following the airline’s liquidation in 2004.
