FIFA RANKINGS: NIGERIA CLIMB 16 PLACES TO BECOME AFRICA’S THIRD-BEST FOLLOWING AFCON SUCCESS

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have recorded a significant rise in the latest FIFA World Rankings, jumping 12 places to 26th globally after an impressive outing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco.

The team’s move up from 38th position follows a strong tournament showing that saw them clinch the bronze medal, making Nigeria the third-highest ranked national team in Africa.

The newly released rankings reflect the impact of AFCON 2025, with the two finalists topping the continent. Senegal, who emerged champions, climbed to 12th place worldwide, while hosts and runners-up Morocco secured the 8th spot globally.

Nigeria’s improved ranking places the Super Eagles ahead of Algeria and Egypt—two sides they defeated during the competition on their way to a third-place finish. The Eagles recorded six wins from seven matches in Morocco, with their only loss coming via penalties against the host nation in the semi-finals. They rounded off their campaign by defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in the third-place playoff.

On the global stage, traditional football giants continue to dominate the top ten, with Spain, Argentina, and France leading the rankings.

Nigeria’s upward movement underlines how a successful run in a major continental tournament can positively influence a country’s ranking points, global reputation, and team morale following a strong championship performance.
