Wale Edun, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, aged approximately 69, has traveled to the United Kingdom for medical care after a fall left him unable to move his hands and knees, a source disclosed. Edun flew from Abuja to Lagos on Monday night via a commercial flight, then departed for London on a British Airways flight.
Initially, Presidency officials reported that Edun was recovering at his Abuja home under the care of Nigerian doctors, refuting claims of a stroke. A senior official confirmed his condition is serious but closely monitored, with no plans to replace him. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President, previously noted Edun’s illness but said he was being treated locally.
Edun’s health issue will prevent him from attending the 2025 World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., with Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso leading Nigeria’s delegation. Appointed in August 2023, Edun is a key figure in President Tinubu’s economic reforms, and his temporary absence may affect fiscal and budget planning.
