Fire Destroys Over 500 Shops in Kano Market

A massive fire has ravaged the Shuwaki Market in Gari Local Government Area of Kano State, destroying more than 500 stalls and goods worth millions of naira.

According to the Kano State Fire Service spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the blaze started around 3:25 p.m. on Wednesday. Firefighters from the Danbatta Station rushed to the scene and battled the flames that engulfed most of the 1,000 temporary stalls in the market. About 529 stalls were completely burnt.

Abdullahi confirmed that no lives were lost, adding that the cause of the fire was suspected to be the actions of intoxicated individuals in the area. The firefighters managed to stop the fire from spreading further, using one jet from Comm 9 during the operation.

The incident is the latest in a series of market fires in Kano. In June 2025, a major blaze destroyed over 300 shops at the state’s popular phone market, while another fire razed six shops at Kurmi Market in April. Authorities continue to urge traders to handle electrical appliances safely to prevent future disasters.
