Nigeria has the resources to achieve food security without relying on imported GMO seeds. A recent breakthrough in yam farming shows that one tuber, cut into 50 pieces, can produce 50 full-grown yams. If widely adopted, this method could boost food supply and reduce scarcity.
Indigenous crops like Ofada rice, rich in nutrients and well-suited to Nigeria’s climate, offer a healthier alternative to GMO imports. To strengthen food security, Nigeria must promote local seed cultivation, encourage organic farming, train farmers in high-yield techniques, and invest in local rice production.
With the right policies, Nigeria can ensure a stable food supply and eliminate dependence on foreign seeds. The time to act is now.
