Four killed in Cameroon protests as results due in contested election

At least four people have been killed in protests in Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital, as tensions rise ahead of the official results of the October 12 presidential election.

Regional governor Samuel Dieudonné Diboua said protesters attacked police posts and that security forces “defended themselves.” He described the violence as “premeditated acts” and confirmed that several officers were injured.

The unrest followed demonstrations by supporters of opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who claims victory over longtime President Paul Biya, in power for 43 years. Authorities banned public gatherings until Monday, when the constitutional council is expected to announce results.

Protests erupted in several cities, including Garoua, Tchiroma Bakary’s stronghold, where police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds. Demonstrators accused the ruling CPDM party of trying to “steal the victory.”

Tchiroma Bakary, a 76-year-old former minister, declared himself the winner with 55% of the vote, citing results from polling stations. The CPDM dismissed his claim, insisting only the constitutional council can declare results.

Once a close ally of Biya, Tchiroma Bakary broke ranks in June to challenge him in the election, marking a dramatic turn in Cameroonian politics.
