TINUBU’S PAST VERSUS HIS PERFORMANCE: WHY LEADERSHIP MUST BE JUDGED BY COMPETENCE, NOT CONTROVERSY
The political storm surrounding Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s past financial entanglements in the United States resurfaced recently following the reemergence of court documents from the early 1990s. These documents, particularly an affidavit by Mr. Kevin Moss, confirmed that both the FBI and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) investigated Tinubu in connection to a probe into a heroin trafficking network operated by Adegboyega Mueez Akande (a.k.a. Mr. Agbele) and others.
The affidavit stated:
“There is probable cause to believe that funds in certain bank accounts controlled by Bola Tinubu were involved in financial transactions… and represent proceeds of drug trafficking.”
As a result, the U.S. government obtained a civil forfeiture judgment leading to the surrender of $460,000 from Tinubu’s U.S. bank account. However, it is crucial to note that no criminal indictment, prosecution, or conviction followed. Tinubu was never charged, and there has been no official statement from U.S. authorities labeling him a criminal.
This issue has remained in the public domain for over three decades and was heavily debated during the 2023 general elections. Nevertheless, Tinubu won the presidential election and was duly sworn in as Nigeria’s president in 2023, supported by a significant number of Nigerians who chose to focus on his vision, record in Lagos, and political experience.
POLITICS, CONTROVERSY, AND THE GLOBAL LEADERSHIP STANDARD
History offers many examples of world leaders who faced allegations or controversies but went on to lead their nations successfully.
Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, was a polarizing figure with multiple lawsuits and criminal charges, including a recent criminal conviction—yet he still commanded a significant following and is the Republican frontrunner for the 2024 election.
Bill Clinton was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives over the Monica Lewinsky scandal, yet he left office with one of the highest approval ratings in modern history.
Barack Obama faced questions over his nationality, religion, and association with controversial figures like Rev. Jeremiah Wright, but emerged as a two-term transformative leader.
Joe Biden, the current U.S. president, has weathered accusations regarding his son’s business dealings and other ethical concerns, yet maintains a strong legislative track record, including infrastructure reforms and COVID-19 recovery programs.
Globally, Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, Narendra Modi of India, and Silvio Berlusconi of Italy have all faced criminal investigations or media scandals, but were repeatedly elected based on their perceived capabilities or popular mandates.
BUSINESS, SUCCESS & IMPERFECTIONS
Across the entrepreneurial world, many celebrated business icons rose despite — or even because of — moments of controversy:
Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has faced allegations about monopolistic practices, tax evasion, and political lobbying, but remains a pivotal player in Nigeria’s industrial development.
Elon Musk, now the world’s wealthiest man, has battled multiple lawsuits, controversial tweets, SEC violations, and labor disputes, but continues to revolutionize industries from electric vehicles to space travel.
Steve Jobs, the late co-founder of Apple, was ousted from his own company early in his career and accused of toxic leadership—but returned to lead one of the greatest corporate comebacks in history.
In all these cases, society eventually judged the individuals not by their past scandals but by the value they brought to the table.
THE CASE FOR EVALUATING LEADERS BY PERFORMANCE
It is vital that the Nigerian public, media, and political class engage in honest conversations about leadership and governance. President Tinubu’s past, while worth documenting, should not become the sole metric for judging his performance.
The core responsibilities of leadership remain: vision, competence, capacity, and results.
Lagos State, under Tinubu’s administration between 1999 and 2007, witnessed structural changes that laid the foundation for what is today Nigeria’s most economically vibrant state. From improving revenue generation to initiating the BRT transport system and establishing LASTMA, Tinubu’s governance blueprint is still a reference point.
While no human is without fault, leadership should be assessed on present delivery, national reform, and legacy-building. Saints no longer walk the earth, but leaders with conviction, courage, and competence can still rise above their flaws to serve their nations honorably.
Conclusion: In a world where information is constantly resurfaced and controversies never die, the public must adopt a balanced view. History is replete with flawed but impactful leaders. If Nigeria is to progress, the discourse must shift from sensationalism to substance.
