Ken Okolugbo, Media Aide to the Senate President, has accused Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara of awarding a ₦20 billion contract to rebuild the Rivers State House of Assembly after allegedly orchestrating its destruction to prevent his impeachment.
Speaking during a TVC interview, Okolugbo alleged, “Fubara gave out a ₦20 billion contract to rebuild the Assembly House because he wanted to war his impeachment.”
He acknowledged public opinions about former governor Nyesom Wike, stating, “People say Wike can be overbearing. Yes, he may have anger issues, but he wasn’t the one who told Fubara to demolish the House of Assembly and recognize only three lawmakers.”
Okolugbo further criticized Governor Fubara for disregarding legal rulings, stating, “Even when the issue of defection was unsettled, he continued. And even after the judgment on January 22, 2024, he still recognized only three Assembly members.”
Referencing recent Supreme Court commentary, he added, “The President intervened because he saw the crisis ahead. And just like the Supreme Court said, the governor acted like a despot.”
He also clarified that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu never directly called Fubara a despot in his presidential speech but was referencing a Supreme Court judgment that used the term.
Okolugbo concluded by defending Tinubu’s intervention, stating that the President likely had security intelligence on the potential consequences of Fubara’s impeachment and acted to prevent further crisis in the state.
