FUEL SUBSIDY: SERAP SUES GOVS, WIKE OVER ‘FAILURE TO ACCOUNT FOR ₦14TRN SAVINGS’

SERAP sues 36 governors, FCT minister over ₦14tn fuel subsidy savings

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against 36 state governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nyesom Wike, over alleged failure to account for ₦14 trillion collected as fuel subsidy savings from FAAC allocations.

In a statement on Sunday, SERAP said the suit follows reports that the governors and the FCT minister have received trillions of naira in fuel subsidy savings since mid-2023, but the funds have not resulted in tangible improvements in healthcare or education for poor and vulnerable Nigerians.

The case, filed last Friday at the Federal High Court, Lagos, carries the number FHC/L/MSC/1424/2025.

SERAP is asking the court to order the governors and Mr Wike to disclose how the increased FAAC allocations from the fuel subsidy savings have been spent, including detailed information on projects executed and completion reports.

The group further wants the court to mandate disclosure of the location and specifics of any projects implemented with the subsidy savings.

“Nigerians have a right to know how public funds, including fuel subsidy savings, are being used by the governors and the FCT minister. The constitutional principle of democracy underpins this right to information,” the statement read.

SERAP added that citizens’ right to know ensures transparency and accountability, which are essential for Nigeria’s democratic governance.

“There is a strong public interest in compelling the governors and the FCT minister to provide a clear account of how they have utilised the funds collected from the subsidy savings,” the group said.

No hearing date has yet been set for the case.
