The Federal Government, through Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB), has successfully connected nine underserved Local Government Areas (LGAs) across Nigeria with broadband connectivity.
The initiative provides reliable internet access to various communities within these LGAs, benefiting scores of rural dwellers by enabling digital services, online marketing opportunities, and empowerment programmes.

This rollout is part of Project 774, which aims to strengthen national digital infrastructure and promote inclusive internet access nationwide.
Since Prof Ibrahim Adeyanju was appointed Managing Director/CEO of Galaxy Backbone Limited by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu two years ago, the agency has driven significant transformation in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

According to a statement by Galaxy Backbone Head of Corporate Communications, Mr Chidi Okpala, these advancements have impacted universities, airports, and various government institutions.
“This initiative extends digital access to communities that previously lacked reliable internet. It reflects our ongoing mission to build Nigeria’s digital backbone and support socio-economic development,” Okpala said.

Key achievements under Prof Adeyanju’s leadership include:
– Completion of Fibre-to-Hostel projects at the University of Lagos, University of Abuja, and University of Jos, creating enhanced research and digital learning environments.
– Connection of strategic national assets such as Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and Federal Secretariats to improve operational efficiency and service delivery.
– Strengthened national fibre backbone through partnership with the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC), improving redundancy and enabling scalable broadband expansion.

– Enhancement of sovereign digital capabilities via the 1Government Cloud platform, providing secure hosting and shared services to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
– Deployment of the locally developed GovMail solution, now serving over 100,000 federal civil servants.
– Upgrades in cybersecurity monitoring, co-location services, data centre operations, and 24/7 Service Desk support.

Okpala noted that Galaxy Backbone has received over 20 national and international awards for its innovation, service delivery, and contributions to Nigeria’s digital transformation.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to expanding connectivity, strengthening cybersecurity, and building a resilient digital foundation in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Okpala also commended the support and guidance of the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, for the agency’s successes.
