Governor Abiodun Expands Ogun Infrastructure Drive with New Road Projects and Power Commitment

Abeokuta, July 5, 2025 | HeadlineNews.News

In a sustained push to deepen infrastructural development and enhance socio-economic connectivity, the Ogun State Executive Council, under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, has approved the reconstruction of key road networks across multiple local government areas of the state.

The newly endorsed projects include:

  • 5.4 km Ogbeere – Orita Mobi Junction Road (Ijebu East LGA)
  • 3.2 km Erinlu – Imosan Road (Odogbolu LGA)
  • 2.0 km Imodi – Imosan Road (Odogbolu LGA)

This approval, announced at the Council’s weekly meeting, marks another bold stride in the governor’s infrastructure agenda, aimed at bridging the rural-urban divide and fostering regional growth.

Strategic Investments in Roads and Security

The administration also sanctioned the procurement of ultra-modern security technology, aimed at reinforcing the state’s security infrastructure and protecting public assets. These developments follow recent approvals for eleven other major road projects, among them:

  • 9.2 km Akute Bridge – Agbado Train Terminal Road
  • 5.5 km Iperu Junction – Ilishan Roundabout (Gateway International Airport Road)
  • 4 km Imasayi – Igan Okoto – Ayetoro Road (Phase 2B)
  • 3.8 km Gao Junction – Ibiade Road
  • 2.8 km General Hospital – Aferiku Road, Ipokia
  • 1.7 km Oke Erinja – Ilobi Road, Phase 2

Governor Abiodun emphasized that these initiatives align with his administration’s commitment to “infrastructure for inclusive prosperity”, a key component of his ISEYA Agenda — Infrastructure, Social Welfare, Education, Youth Empowerment, and Agriculture.

Our road infrastructure is not just about asphalt — it’s about access, dignity, and economic mobility,” the Governor stated at the meeting.

We are intentionally connecting agricultural belts to markets, schools to students, and hospitals to communities.”

Power Supply Transformation Underway

In a related development, Governor Abiodun commended the progress of the Onijaganjagan Independent Power Plant in Abeokuta. The plant, when completed, is expected to provide stable electricity for strategic sectors and households in the state capital and its environs.

This complements previous renewable and embedded power initiatives championed by the state under the Ogun Light-Up Project, positioning Ogun as a sub-national model for sustainable energy reform.

Historical Context: Ogun’s Infrastructure Renaissance

Ogun State has historically served as the industrial corridor of Nigeria’s southwest, hosting major logistics, manufacturing, and agro-processing hubs. Yet, much of its inter-town and rural road networks had suffered years of neglect until the Abiodun administration’s accelerated rehabilitation programme.

Between 2019 and 2023 alone, the state reportedly executed over 400 km of roads, including strategic connections to Lagos and Oyo states.

Infrastructure remains critical in attracting investments to key industrial zones such as:

  • The Remo Economic Industrial Cluster
  • Agbara Industrial Estate
  • The Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport, currently under construction

Analysis: More Than Roads — It’s Economic Engineering

Experts argue that the multiplier effect of road infrastructure includes:

  • Lower transportation costs for farmers and SMEs
  • Improved access to education and healthcare
  • Increased land and property values
  • Safer, more efficient mobility for goods and people

By integrating infrastructure with security enhancement and power reforms, Ogun State demonstrates a multidimensional development model increasingly aligned with international standards.

Infrastructure is the currency of development. It opens up regions, empowers local enterprise, and strengthens state GDP,”

— Dr. Kemi Ogundipe, Infrastructure Economist, Lagos Business School.

Governor Abiodun’s vision transcends roadworks; he is laying the arteries for commerce, community resilience, and 21st-century governance. Ogun is now a study in pragmatic leadership.”

Conclusion: A Steady Hand on the Wheel

As many states grapple with economic headwinds, Ogun’s approach to consistent, data-driven infrastructure expansion offers a template for sub-national transformation. With a mix of road rehabilitation, security enhancement, and power-sector reform, Governor Abiodun’s administration is building not just infrastructure — but a legacy.
