Ijebu Ode, Ogun State — In a heartfelt tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, GCON, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has announced the renaming of the Tai Solarin College of Education. The institution will now be known as Oba Sikiru Adetona College of Science and Technology.
Governor Abiodun made the announcement during the 8th Day Fidau prayer held in honour of the revered monarch in Ijebu Ode. He said the renaming was a symbolic gesture to immortalize the traditional ruler, whom he described as “an icon of integrity, vision, and unwavering commitment to education and development.”
According to the governor, the new name reflects both the forward-looking direction of the college and the legacy of Oba Adetona, whose life and reign significantly advanced education, public service, and traditional leadership in Nigeria.
“As a state, we believe it is only fitting to ensure that the legacy of Kabiyesi is immortalised in a way that inspires future generations,” Governor Abiodun stated. “The renaming of the college is our token of appreciation for his contributions to national unity, educational progress, and cultural preservation.”
The governor further noted that the late monarch was instrumental in the establishment and growth of the institution and had long been an advocate for youth empowerment through quality education and technological advancement.
Oba Sikiru Adetona, who passed away recently at the age of 90, was Nigeria’s longest-reigning first-class monarch, having ascended the throne in 1960. His reign witnessed notable developments in education, peace-building, and the strengthening of traditional institutions in Nigeria.
The announcement was received with widespread applause from stakeholders, traditional leaders, and members of the public present at the prayer session. It marks a lasting tribute to a royal figure whose influence reached far beyond his domain.
