Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya has dissolved the State Executive Council, a move seen as an early political reset ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decision was announced on Wednesday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ibrahim Njodi, following an “extraordinary session” of the council that reviewed the administration’s performance over the past two and a half years of Governor Yahaya’s second term.
Speaking to journalists in Gombe, Njodi said the session served as a “postmortem” of governance activities and concluded that the government had achieved significant progress across sectors, describing the results as “excellent.”

He explained that after evaluating both governance and the political climate, Governor Yahaya felt it was necessary to dissolve the cabinet to allow members of the executive and other political appointees to pursue personal political ambitions.
“The governor’s action is aimed at ensuring fairness and providing a level playing field for all those interested in elective positions ahead of the next election cycle,” Njodi said.
All commissioners have been directed to hand over their ministries to the Permanent Secretaries by Friday, April 10, 2026. The directive also applies to political appointees, aides, and public and civil servants intending to contest elective offices in 2027. Those planning to join partisan politics were advised to resign by the same date.

The dissolution marks a significant shift in the structure of Gombe State’s government and is expected to trigger political realignments within the ruling circle as preparations for the next elections intensify.
Governor Yahaya, who also chairs the Northern States Governors’ Forum, expressed gratitude to the outgoing commissioners and appointees for their loyalty, commitment, and service. He acknowledged their contributions to the administration’s achievements and wished those seeking elective offices well in their future endeavors.
Njodi also extended the governor’s appreciation to journalists in the state, urging them to remain responsible and supportive while continuing to strengthen governance and accountability in Gombe State.
The cabinet dissolution is expected to reshape the political landscape in Gombe in the coming weeks as attention gradually shifts from governance to electoral strategies ahead of 2027.
