Gunmen Attack Cash Vehicle in Ilorin, Injure Driver

Panic broke out in Ilorin on Thursday when armed robbers targeted a vehicle transporting cash along Post Office Road, directly opposite the Kwara State Correspondents’ Chapel.

Eyewitnesses said the masked assailants appeared to follow their target before striking. They trailed a grey Toyota Sienna with registration AA 693 GT and opened fire from behind, puncturing two tyres on the left side of the vehicle. The robbers then seized cash packed in four large cartons before fleeing in an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla with a faded number plate.

The driver, who was carrying the money for an undisclosed assignment, sustained a gunshot wound to his palm.

Confirming the incident, Kwara State Police spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi said the robbery occurred at about 11:30am on December 12, 2025.

“An armed robbery occurred around 11:30 hours along Post Office Road, Ilorin. The driver of a Sienna vehicle was attacked by armed men, sustaining a gunshot injury to his palm, while an undisclosed sum of money was stolen. He is receiving medical treatment,” she stated.

She added that Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi, has launched a discreet investigation and strengthened security across the Ilorin metropolis.

“The CP has increased police patrols to reassure residents and prevent further attacks,” the statement said.

CP Adekimi also warned residents against carrying large sums of cash, urging the use of electronic transactions. For unavoidable cash movements, he advised using trusted bank escort services.

The police further urged the public to report any suspicious activity, especially near banks, markets, or busy commercial areas.

Kwara State has previously experienced high-profile robberies, including the 2018 Offa bank robbery, one of Nigeria’s deadliest, which claimed the lives of security personnel and civilians.
