President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday presided over a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away on July 13 at the age of 82.
The solemn gathering, held at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, brought together an expanded audience, including top members of the National Assembly. Notable attendees included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. Members of Buhari’s family, including his son Yusuf and three of his siblings, were also present.
In a heartfelt tribute, President Tinubu described Buhari as a man of discipline, integrity, and unwavering patriotism. While acknowledging that no leader is perfect, Tinubu praised Buhari as “a good, decent, and honourable man” who set a moral benchmark in public service.
“Though every legacy invites scrutiny, the incorruptible standard Buhari set will not be forgotten,” Tinubu said. “He stood firm—unmoved by the temptations of power, unswayed by applause, and unafraid of the loneliness that often comes with choosing what is right over what is popular.”
Tinubu reflected on their shared political journey, particularly the historic 2015 election that marked Nigeria’s first peaceful democratic transfer of power between parties. He commended Buhari’s dignified leadership and restraint during his presidency, highlighting his commitment to justice, transparency, and silent courage.
“Buhari’s patriotism was never performative,” Tinubu noted. “He lived it in action, not in words. He led with humility and carried the weight of leadership without complaint.”
The session ended with prayers and a moment of silence in honour of the late leader. Tributes continue to pour in from across the country, as Nigerians reflect on Buhari’s life of service and the principles he stood for.
Buhari, who had been battling a prolonged illness, died in a London hospital. His remains were flown back to Nigeria, received with full military honours in Katsina State, and later laid to rest in Daura on July 15, following Islamic rites.
