If The Throne Of Alaafin Is Superior To Ooni, Why Did Oranmiyan Abandon The Throne? – Wike’s Aide

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Adviser on Media to former Rivers State governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has stirred debate with his remarks on the ongoing tussle over supremacy between the Alaafin of Oyo and the Ooni of Ife.

The dispute resurfaced recently after the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, clashed over a chieftaincy title conferred on a business tycoon. The Ooni reportedly issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding the reversal of the title, but the directive was ignored and even mocked by some observers.

The development triggered mixed reactions across the country, with many Nigerians questioning which throne holds greater authority—Oyo or Ife.

Reacting to the controversy on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Olayinka posed a series of historical questions centered on Oranmiyan, the legendary progenitor of the Alaafin monarchy.

“Finally, just three questions and no more,” Olayinka wrote.

“1. If the throne of the Alaafin of Oyo is superior to that of the Ooni of Ife, why did Oranmiyan abandon the throne of Alaafin for his son and return to Ile-Ife to wrestle the Ooni’s throne with the 5th Ooni, Obalufon Alayemore?

  1. Why did Oranmiyan opt for the Ooni’s throne, ascending as the 6th Ooni of Ife, instead of remaining in Oyo as Alaafin?
  2. Why was Oranmiyan buried in Ile-Ife rather than in Oyo?”

By revisiting the roots of the centuries-old rivalry, Olayinka suggested that Oranmiyan’s actions were a strong indication of the historical primacy of the Ooni’s throne over that of the Alaafin.

His remarks have since sparked fresh debate on social media, with many weighing in on the long-standing cultural and political significance of both royal stools in Yoruba history.
