Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has inaugurated an eight-member high-level committee to oversee the implementation of state policing and advance his policing vision following his confirmation as substantive IGP.
Disu held his first formal engagement with senior police officers on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, shortly after the Nigeria Police Council unanimously ratified his appointment on Tuesday.
The council’s endorsement cleared the path for his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa later on Wednesday.
Addressing the Force leadership, IGP Disu emphasised that leadership is about responsibility, not position.
He declared that professionalism and accountability must become core guiding principles shaping conduct and operations across all commands nationwide.
Disu stressed that authority is strongest when exercised with restraint, and respect for human rights must remain fundamental.
“Every Nigerian must be treated with dignity, fairness, and justice, regardless of status or background,” he said.
He announced plans to strengthen internal oversight by empowering the Public Complaint Unit and X-Squad to operate independently and effectively.
The IGP further explained that decentralising police functions will allow various levels of government to actively participate in security.
Professor Olu Ogunsakin was appointed to lead the eight-member state police implementation committee.
The inauguration comes at a pivotal time for the Nigeria Police Force following the leadership transition. President Tinubu appointed Disu as Acting IGP on February 24, 2026, after the resignation of predecessor Kayode Egbetokun.
Disu’s appointment was unanimously endorsed by the Nigeria Police Council after a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa.
The state police initiative, championed by the current administration, forms part of broader security sector reforms aimed at decentralising policing powers to improve responsiveness at local levels.
Disu’s elevation occurs amid heightened national security concerns, including rising kidnappings, banditry, and community attacks.
